Winning a James Beard award is seen as one of the highest honors in the restaurant industry, and a nod from the foundation has the potential to bring press attention and prestige to chefs at a variety of stages in their careers.Īlong with announcing restaurant and chef nominees, the foundation honored the iconic cookbook author Madhur Jaffrey and the farmer and activist Karen Washington with this year's Lifetime Achievement and Humanitarian of the Year awards, respectively. The foundation grants awards to chefs, restaurateurs, bar owners, media professionals, authors, and other influential figures in the food and hospitality space. Finalists in the new category include Miami’s Zak the Baker and Yoli Tortilleria in Kansas City, MO. This year’s list also features the first nominees in a new Outstanding Bakery category, recognizing exemplary breads, pastries, or desserts. Shaina Loew-Banayan, chef-owner of Cafe Mutton in Hudson, New York-one of BA’s Best New Restaurants of 2022-is nominated as Best Chef: New York State. This year’s award nominees include Amanda Shulman of Her Place Supper Club in Philadelphia (Emerging Chef) and New York’s Dept of Culture (Best New Restaurant).
